Guaymate is a town in the Dominican Republic. It is located in the La Romana province. This province is in the eastern part of the country. Guaymate is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away from the city of La Romana.
Guaymate became an official municipality on February 27, 1963. A municipality is like a local government area. It helps manage the town and its surrounding areas. Guaymate is still a part of the La Romana province today. The town is growing, especially in its northern parts. This growth is happening thanks to new land being made available.
What's in a Name?
The name Guaymate has an interesting story. Many people believe it comes from a tree. This tree was called "guamate" and was common in the local mountains. The first people living here supposedly added the letter "y" to the name. This is how "Guaymate" might have been born.
However, this is just a legend. The true origin of the name might never be fully known. What we do know is that the name Guaymate was accepted when the town joined the La Romana province.
