Guccio Gucci's Early Life
Guccio Gucci was born in Florence, Tuscany, Italy, on March 26, 1881. His father, Gabriello Gucci, was a leather craftsman. His mother was Elena Santini.
When he was a teenager in 1899, Guccio worked at the Savoy Hotel in London, England. He was very impressed by the fancy guests and their stylish luggage. This experience inspired him to create his own luxury bags and accessories. He later returned to Florence to start his business.
Starting the Gucci Company
In 1921, Guccio Gucci opened his first shop in Florence. It was a small, family-run leather business. At first, he sold saddles, leather bags, and other items for people who rode horses.
His business grew, and in 1938, his son Aldo convinced him to open a second store in Rome. Over time, his sons joined the company, turning it into a true family business.
Expanding the Gucci Brand
In 1951, Gucci opened a store in Milan. Guccio wanted to keep his business small and mostly in Italy. However, just two weeks before he passed away, his sons Aldo, Rodolfo, and Vasco opened the first Gucci store in New York City. This marked the beginning of Gucci's international expansion.
Guccio Gucci's Legacy
Guccio Gucci died on January 2, 1953, in Milan. After his death, his five sons took over the company. They helped the Gucci brand grow even more, opening stores around the world and creating many new types of products.
Today, there is a museum in Florence called the Gucci Garden (or Gucci Museum). It tells the story of the company and its founder, Guccio Gucci.
Guccio Gucci's Family Life
Guccio Gucci married Aida Calvelli in 1901. They had six children together, five sons and one daughter. One of his sons, Ugo Calvelli Gucci, was adopted from his wife's previous relationship. Sadly, another son, Enzo, died when he was a child.
His sons Ugo, Aldo, Vasco, and Rodolfo Gucci played important roles in the company. However, his daughter was not given a role. There was often a lot of competition among the brothers for power within the company. This became a big problem for the family in the 1980s.
In his later years, Guccio Gucci lived near Rusper, in West Sussex, England.
