About Guem

Early Life and Music

Guem grew up in a city called Batna in Algeria. When he was young, he loved both music and sports! He played percussion in different music groups. He was also a football (soccer) player for a team called CA Batna. In the 1970s, he moved to France and lived there permanently.

Guem first performed on stage at a dance event on July 14, 1966. In 1970, he started working at the American Center in Paris. There, he played alongside famous jazz musicians like Steve Lacy and Michel Portal.

His Music and Tours

Guem recorded many music albums and traveled around the world for his performances. This helped him become very well-known. His first album was called Percussions Africaines, released in 1973. Later, in 1978, he released Guem et Zaka.

He also created a song called Le Serpent. This song was later re-recorded in 1996 for a TV show in France. In 2011, Guem made an album called Mon Paris. Each song on this album was about a different part of Paris. He called Paris the "most beautiful city in the world."

Sharing His Passion

Guem had a daughter named Sarah. She sometimes danced on stage with him during his shows. He also taught percussion and dance classes at a place called the Centre des arts vivants. Guem had a special saying he shared with his students: "Rhythm is life, and rhythm belongs to everyone. When you have a passion, you have to share it."

Guem passed away in Paris on January 22, 2021. He was 73 years old.
