Guillermo Ortelli was born in Salto, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, on April 25, 1973. He is a famous Argentine race car driver. He has won many championships in a popular racing series called Turismo Carretera. In fact, he is one of the drivers with the most titles in its history, having won seven times!
Guillermo's Racing Journey
Guillermo Ortelli first found success playing soccer for his hometown club, Sports Salto. He even won a championship there! But his true passion soon turned to motor racing.
When he was 16, his father, Hugo, bought him a go-kart. Guillermo started competing in the Buenos Aires Province kart tournament. He finished second in the series, racing against other talented drivers like Norberto Fontana. His skill caught the eye of Tulio Crespi, who invited him to race in the Argentine Formula Renault series.
After two years in Formula Renault, Guillermo got the chance to drive a Ford Escort XR3 in the TC2000 series. He also began his career in Turismo Carretera (TC), which is the most popular car racing category in Argentina. In 1998, he made history by becoming the youngest TC champion ever! He received special awards from Clarín and Olimpia Awards that year for his amazing achievement.
He won his second TC championship in 2000. That same year, he also finished second in the Top Race series. There was a disagreement between two racing organizations, ACTC and CDA (ACA). This meant he couldn't race in TC2000 for a while, even though he was planning to join the Toyota team.
In 2001, Guillermo had an incredible year, winning both the Top Race and TC Championships! He beat Omar Martínez in the very last race of each season. Once the disagreement between ACTC and ACA ended, he was able to return to TC2000. He drove a Honda car, teaming up with Juan Manuel Silva and Oscar Larrauri.
In 2002, a team called Tango Racing asked him to race in the ARCA series in the United States. He competed in one race, driving a Chevy Monte Carlo, but he didn't finish. He soon returned to Argentina and once again became the Turismo Carretera champion!
Guillermo returned to the new Top Race V6 series in 2005. He drove a Chevrolet Vectra car sponsored by Club Atlético Boca Juniors. He won the championship at the end of that season.
From 2006 to 2008, Ortelli continued to race in TC2000 with the official Chevrolet team. He finished 6th, 4th, and 2nd in those years. In 2009, he switched to another Chevrolet team, finishing 8th that year and 11th the next. He then returned to Renault for the 2011 season.
In 2010, he received the Konex Award. This award recognized him as one of the five best racing drivers in Argentina from the previous ten years.
Guillermo Ortelli continues to race in TC today. He won his last championship in 2016. He has an impressive record with nearly 400 races, 30 victories, 30 pole positions (starting from the front), and 100 podium finishes (placing in the top three). Between 2012 and 2014, he raced with Renault in Súper TC 2000. From 2014 to 2017, he also competed in Turismo Nacional.
