Guillermo Ungo's Early Political Life
Guillermo Ungo became a well-known figure in Salvadoran politics. In 1972, he ran for Vice President of El Salvador. He was the running mate (the person running alongside the main candidate) for Christian democrat José Napoleón Duarte.
The official results of the 1972 Salvadoran presidential election said that a military-backed candidate won. However, many people thought this election was not fair.
Serving in Government
Later, from 1979 to 1980, Guillermo Ungo was part of the ruling government junta. A "junta" is a group of military leaders who take control of a country's government. During this time, he worked within the government.
Leading the Opposition
Even though he was part of the government for a short time, Guillermo Ungo also became a strong voice for the opposition. The "opposition" refers to political parties or groups that are against the current government. He was seen as an unofficial leader of the opposition because he was the president of an alliance called the Revolutionary Democratic Front. This group worked to bring about democratic changes in El Salvador.
Return from Exile
For a period, Guillermo Ungo had to live outside El Salvador. This is called "exile." He returned to his home country in November 1987. He came back with another important opposition politician, Rubén Zamora, who was his political friend.
In December 1987, their different groups joined together to form a new group called the Democratic Convergence. However, this new group did not put forward any candidates in the parliamentary elections that happened in 1988.
