The Story of Wagh Bakri Tea
The story of Wagh Bakri tea began a long time ago, in 1915. A businessman named Narandas Desai started a company called Gujarat Tea Depot Co. He had learned a lot about the tea business while working in South Africa.
How the Name "Wagh Bakri" Came About
The famous 'Wagh Bakri' brand name was created in 1934. Before that, the company was just known as Gujarat Tea Depot Co. The name "Wagh Bakri" is very special. In the Gujarati language, "Wagh" means tiger, and "Bakri" means goat.
The tiger often represents powerful or upper-class people, while the goat can represent common or lower-class people. The idea behind the name is that both the tiger and the goat can drink tea from the same cup. This shows how tea can bring everyone together, no matter their background. It's a symbol of friendship and equality.
Growing Across India
After becoming 'Wagh Bakri', the company started selling its tea in more states across India, like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Later, between 2007 and 2009, they expanded even more, bringing their tea to places like Maharashtra, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.
Wagh Bakri Tea Lounges
To give people a special place to enjoy tea, Wagh Bakri opened its first 'Tea Lounge' in Mumbai. These lounges offer many different kinds of flavored teas and tasty snacks. They later opened more lounges in other cities, including Delhi. Sadly, Parag Desai, who was an important leader in the company, passed away in October 2023.
How Wagh Bakri Tea is Made
Wagh Bakri processes and packs its tea leaves at a factory located in the Kheda district of Gujarat, India. The main office is in Ahmedabad. Once the tea is packaged, it is sent out to stores and distributors through a big network, so people all over can buy it.
Awards and Recognition
The Wagh Bakri Tea Group has received special awards for their work. In October 2024, they were given the Generational Legacy Award by Hurun India. This award recognized their great contribution to the Indian economy over many years.
