The Story of Wagh Bakri Tea
How it All Started (1892-1915)
The story of this tea company began with a person named Narandas Desai. He learned a lot about the tea business in South Africa. In 1915, he came back to India. Soon after, he started his own company called Gujarat Tea Depot Co.
The Birth of 'Wagh Bakri' (1934-1980)
In 1934, the famous 'Wagh Bakri' brand was created. Before this, the company was known as Gujarat Tea Depot Co. Later, its name changed to Gujarat Tea Processors & Packers Ltd.
The name 'Wagh Bakri' is very special. 'Wagh' means tiger in Gujarati, and 'Bakri' means goat. The tiger often represents the upper class, and the goat represents the lower class. The idea of a tiger and a goat drinking tea from the same cup shows harmony. It means that tea can bring everyone together, no matter their background.
Growing Across India (1998-2009)
From 1998 to 2003, Gujarat Tea Processors & Packers Ltd started selling 'Wagh Bakri' Tea in more Indian states. These included Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
Between 2007 and 2009, the 'Wagh Bakri' Tea brand reached even more states. It became available in Maharashtra, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. During this time, the company also opened its first 'Wagh Bakri Tea Lounge' in Mumbai. These lounges are places where people can relax and try many different kinds of flavored tea and snacks. Another tea lounge was later opened in Delhi.
New Tea Lounges (2014)
In 2014, the company opened another Tea Lounge. This one was in the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Mumbai.
A Sad Event (2023)
On October 23, 2023, Parag Desai, who was an important leader in the company, sadly passed away after an accident.
