Museum buildings in the late 1800s

The Gulgong Holtermann Museum is a really cool place in the historic gold rush town of Gulgong, New South Wales. It's a special project by the community to share history! The museum is built inside two of the town's very first buildings. These buildings are so famous, they even appear on the Australian ten-dollar note!

The museum is an exciting and interactive place for learning and tourists. It's based on the amazing Holtermann Collection. This collection is a series of photographs from the 1870s, taken during the "roaring days" of the gold rush. These photos are so important that they are even listed by UNESCO, a big international organization that protects special places and things.

The museum officially opened its doors on October 26, 2019. Before that, a public launch event happened on January 22, 2015.

Exploring the Museum

The museum was designed by an architect named Jiri Lev. He created a series of three connected buildings behind the old historic ones. These new parts are super flexible!

  • The first new building is an extra space for exhibits. It can also show temporary displays.
  • The second building is a large area for events.
  • The third building is a workshop space where people can learn and create.

The museum's design is also very smart. It uses natural ways to stay warm in winter and cool in summer. It also uses natural light, which is great for the environment!

Building the Dream

A lot of hard work went into creating the Gulgong Holtermann Museum. Most of the building was done by volunteers! This means people from the community gave their time and effort for free.

The museum also received help from the NSW Regional Cultural Fund. On July 2, 2018, the New South Wales Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and Minister Troy Grant visited the museum. This showed how important the project was to the state.
