The Gulgong Holtermann Museum is a special place in the historic gold rush town of Gulgong, New South Wales, Australia. It's a community project that brings history to life! The museum is housed in two of Gulgong's oldest buildings. These buildings are so famous, they even appear on the Australian ten-dollar note!

The museum offers a fun and educational experience for visitors. It focuses on the amazing Holtermann Collection. This collection includes many old photographs taken in the 1870s during the exciting "roaring days" of the gold rush. These photos are so important that they are even listed by UNESCO, a special part of the United Nations that protects important cultural sites.

About the Gulgong Holtermann Museum

The Gulgong Holtermann Museum officially opened its doors on October 26, 2019. It's a place where you can learn about the past in an interactive way. The museum was designed by an architect named Jiri Lev. He created a series of three connected buildings behind the original old street-front buildings.

What You'll Find Inside

The museum has different areas for different activities:

  • One part is an extension of the main exhibition space. It's used for showing temporary exhibits.
  • Another area is a special space for events.
  • The third area is a workshop space, perfect for hands-on activities.

The museum building itself is also very clever! It uses natural ways to stay warm in winter and cool in summer. It also uses natural light, which helps save energy.

How the Museum Was Built

A lot of hard work went into creating the Gulgong Holtermann Museum. Many people volunteered their time and effort to help build it. This shows how much the community wanted this museum to exist! The museum also received support from the NSW Regional Cultural Fund, which helps cultural projects in different areas.

On July 2, 2018, some important people visited the museum. These included the New South Wales premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and minister Troy Grant. Their visit showed how important the museum is to the region.
