The Gumti River

The Gumti River is an important river that begins its journey in a place called Dumbur. This area is found in the hilly northeastern part of Tripura.

About the Gumti River

The Gumti is a river that flows through hills and has a strong current. The amount of water flowing in it changes a lot. For example, near Comilla, the water flow can be as low as 100 cubic feet per second or as high as 20,000 cubic feet per second!

During the rainy season, the river becomes very wide, about 100 meters across. It fills up from one bank to the other, and the water moves very quickly. However, in the winter, the river shrinks a lot. In many places, you can even walk across it because the water is so shallow.

In a year with normal rainfall, the river's water level can rise more than 1.5 meters above the land around it. Because of this, sudden floods, called flash floods, happen often along the Gumti River.
