Gunilla Borgefors was born in 1952 in Norrköping, Sweden. She went to Linköping University. In 1975, she earned a master's degree there. This degree was in applied mathematics, which uses math to solve real-world problems. Later, she studied at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. In 1986, she earned her Ph.D. This is the highest university degree. Her studies focused on how computers can "see" and understand images. Her big research paper was about finding edges in digital pictures. She also earned another master's degree. This one was in journalism from Uppsala University in 2007.

Her Career in Science

From 1982 to 1993, Gunilla Borgefors worked for the Swedish Defence Research Agency. This agency does research for Sweden's defense. She became a research director there. She led the computer vision and information systems groups. In 1993, she became a professor. She taught at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. There, she led the Centre for Image Analysis. Later, in 2005, she started working at Uppsala University. She became a full-time professor there in 2012. She also helped lead the science community. From 2011, she was the main editor for a science magazine. It was called Pattern Recognition Letters. She also led the Swedish Society for Automated Image Analysis from 1988 to 1992.

Awards and Honors

This honor was for her work in digital geometry. It also recognized her great service to the association. She became an IEEE Fellow in 2008. This was for her important work in discrete geometry and image analysis. She was also chosen to be a member of important scientific groups. In 2000, she joined the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala. In 2011, she became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. In 2007, she won the Edlund Prize.
