Gunnel Vallquist (born June 19, 1918 – died January 11, 2016) was a famous Swedish writer and translator. She was born in Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden.

Gunnel Vallquist wrote more than twenty books during her life. She was also very skilled at translating books from one language to another. One of her most important translation projects was turning the long French novel In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust into Swedish. This was a huge task because the book is very long and complex.

Joining the Swedish Academy

In 1982, Gunnel Vallquist became a member of the Swedish Academy. This is a very important group in Sweden. The Swedish Academy helps to promote the Swedish language and literature. They are also the group that chooses who wins the Nobel Prize in Literature each year. Being chosen as a member of this academy is a great honor for any writer or scholar in Sweden.
