Gurrufío facts for kids
Gurrufío is a fun, traditional toy from Venezuela that's super simple to make and play with! It's also known as a button whirligig or buzzer. Imagine a flat disc, like a big button, with a string threaded through it. When you pull the string just right, the disc spins super fast and makes a cool buzzing sound!
What is a Gurrufío?
A gurrufío is usually made from a flat, round piece of wood, plastic, or even a flattened metal bottle cap. Two small holes are drilled or nailed into the center of the disc, making sure they are equally spaced. Then, a piece of string, about 15 to 30 centimeters long, is passed through both holes. The ends of the string are tied together to form a loop.
How to Play with a Gurrufío
Playing with a gurrufío is easy and fun!
- First, hold the ends of the string loop with your fingers, one end in each hand.
- Let the disc hang in the middle.
- Now, gently spin the disc a few times to twist the string.
- Once the string is twisted, pull your hands apart quickly and firmly to make the string taut. The disc will start to spin very fast!
- As the disc spins, it will twist the string in the opposite direction. When it reaches its maximum spin, relax your hands a little to release the tension.
- Then, pull your hands apart again with another quick yank. This will make the disc spin in the opposite direction, and the fun continues! The rapid spinning often creates a buzzing sound, which is why it's also called a "buzzer."
Gurrufíos are a great example of how simple materials can create an entertaining and classic toy that has been enjoyed by children for many years in Venezuela.
