Gus Fisher Gallery is a cool art gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. It is owned and run by the University of Auckland. You can find it inside a beautiful old building called the Kenneth Myers Centre. This building was fixed up in 2000 with help from a kind supporter named Gus Fisher.
The gallery shows off amazing art from artists in New Zealand and all over the world. They have many different types of exhibitions. The gallery also hosts fun events like performances, movie showings, workshops, and activities for families.
About Gus Fisher Gallery
The Gus Fisher Gallery first opened its doors in 2001. It was a special place for the very first Auckland Triennial art event. Robin Stoney was the first director of the gallery.
From 2006 to 2017, the gallery was managed by the University of Auckland Centre for Art Research. This centre helped with art studies and research. The gallery aimed to show a good mix of new and old art. It wanted to explore what was happening in the art world both in New Zealand and globally.
In 2008, Gus Fisher Gallery won an award! Metro Magazine named it the "Best Arts Institution in Auckland." This was a big achievement for the gallery.
Focus on Contemporary Art
In 2018, the Gus Fisher Gallery decided to focus more on modern art. They started showing more film and video art. This was a nod to the building's past, as it used to be broadcasting studios.
The gallery closed for a short time in September 2018 for renovations. It then reopened in April 2019 with a fresh new look.
Visiting the Gallery
Gus Fisher Gallery is open from Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 5pm. On Saturdays, it's open from 12pm to 4pm. The best part is that entry is always free!
