Guthrie, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Guthrie is a small, unincorporated community located in the western part of Callaway County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Guthrie is found where two roads, Missouri routes J and Y, meet.

If you travel two miles south on Route J, you'll find the town of New Bloomfield. About four miles east on Route Y, you can visit the Pine Ridge Recreation Area. This area is part of the Mark Twain National Forest and is located along Cedar Creek, a beautiful natural spot.

Discovering Guthrie's Past

Guthrie has an interesting history, starting with a different name.

How Guthrie Got Its Name

This community was first known as Bigbee. It was officially set up in 1872 by a person named B. S. Bigbee. Later, the name was changed to Guthrie to honor two important early residents, John and Samuel N. Guthrie.

When Did Guthrie Have a Post Office?

A post office, which helps send and receive mail, was first opened in Bigbee in 1872. When the community's name changed to Guthrie in 1874, the post office name changed too. However, the post office eventually closed its doors in 1954.
