Guthrie Castle facts for kids
Guthrie Castle is an old and beautiful castle located in Angus, Scotland. It's found near the village of Guthrie, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of Forfar and 29 kilometers (18 miles) north-east of Dundee. This castle has a long history, going back to the 1400s, but many parts of it were built much later in the 1800s. Today, it is a private home.
The Story of Guthrie Castle
Guthrie Castle began as a strong tower house. It was first built in 1468 by a very important person named Sir David Guthrie. He was the Treasurer of Scotland and also a top judge. The Guthrie family later built another house right next to this tower.
Connecting the Buildings
In 1848, the tower and the house were joined together. This was done with a new building designed by a famous architect named David Bryce. He used a style called Scottish Baronial, which makes buildings look like old castles. The historic tower stayed with the Guthrie family for a very long time, until 1983.
Bringing the Castle Back to Life
In 1984, an American businessman named Daniel S. Peña, Sr. bought Guthrie Castle. He worked hard to bring the castle back to how it looked in the 1800s. He also added a golf course to the castle grounds in 1994 and 1995.
For a while, starting in 2003, the castle and its grounds were open to visitors. People could hold weddings, company events, and group gatherings there. However, since 2017, the owners decided that the castle would no longer be open to the public. It is now a private home once again.
