Gutman, Ohio facts for kids
Gutman is a small, unincorporated community located in Auglaize County, Ohio. An "unincorporated community" is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or a village. Instead, it's usually governed by the county.
A Look Back: Gutman's History
Gutman has a simple but interesting past. A post office was opened here in 1884, which was a very important service for people living in the area. It allowed them to send and receive letters and packages. This post office served the community for many years before it closed in 1905.
The community itself was named after the Gutman family. This family owned a local store, which was likely a central place for people to buy supplies and gather.
The Railroad's Role
A section of the Toledo and Ohio Central Railroad once ran right through Gutman. Railroads were vital for transportation and trade in the past, connecting communities and moving goods. This particular line was later taken over by the New York Central railroad company. However, like many old rail lines, it was eventually abandoned in the 1960s. You can see a photo of the old railroad depot (a building where trains stopped and passengers waited) that was once in Gutman here.
