Gwyneth Leith (born July 5, 1946 – died September 8, 2022) was an English actress. She was better known by her stage name Gwyneth Powell. She became famous for playing the headmistress Bridget McClusky. This was in the BBC television series Grange Hill. She played this role for eleven years, from 1981 to 1991.

About Gwyneth's Early Life
Gwyneth Powell was born in Levenshulme, Manchester. This was on July 5, 1946. She went to Cheadle County Grammar School for Girls. While at school, she acted in a play. It was called Bartholemew Fair. She received good reviews for her acting.
She first trained to be a teacher. She studied at Goldsmiths, University of London. But she decided to become an actress instead. She started working in repertory theatre. This is where actors perform different plays regularly.
Gwyneth Powell's Acting Career
Gwyneth Powell's first big TV role was in 1971. It was in a drama series called The Guardians. She appeared in many TV dramas after that. Then she got the role in Grange Hill.
Playing Mrs. McClusky in Grange Hill
In Grange Hill, she played Bridget McClusky. She was a "firm but fair" headmistress. People sometimes called her "The Midget". Gwyneth played this character for eleven years.
She talked about her role in 2008. She said that Mrs. McClusky was first written as a very traditional character. But Gwyneth was young and wanted to play her differently. They made the character more fashionable. Gwyneth felt that Mrs. McClusky inspired young women teachers. She thought the show and her character had a big impact.
Leaving Grange Hill and Other Roles
Eventually, Gwyneth wanted to try other things. She told the Grange Hill producers a year in advance. This gave them time to write Mrs. McClusky out of the show. She then bought the rights to a book. In 2009, she made a small return as Mrs. McClusky. This was for an episode of Ashes to Ashes. They used old clips and added new lines from her. She also acted in a play called Arsenic and Old Lace. In 2010, she played Nana in The Gemma Factor. From 2011 to 2013, she was in House of Anubis. She played Nina Martin's grandmother. In 2013, she played Polly Davies. This was the mother of Greg Davies' character in the comedy Man Down.
Gwyneth's Personal Life
Gwyneth Powell married actor Alan Leith in 1971. She lived in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex. She supported a local drama group there. It was called the Hurstpierpoint Players.
She passed away in Brighton on September 8, 2022. She was 76 years old. Her death was due to problems after surgery.
