Becoming a Mathematician
Gwyneth Stallard loved math from a young age. She studied mathematics at King's College, Cambridge, and finished her degree in 1985. Later, she earned her Ph.D. from Imperial College London in 1991. Her Ph.D. project was about "problems in the iteration of meromorphic functions." This means she looked at how certain math functions behave when you repeat them many times.
After her Ph.D., it was hard to find a research job in England. She took a temporary teaching job at the University of Southampton. She taught math to engineering students there. This helped her continue her career in mathematics.
First Woman Professor
