Gwynt y Môr Wind Farm facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gwynt y Môr is a really big wind farm built in the sea off the coast of North Wales. It's like a giant power station that uses wind to make electricity! When it started working in 2014, it became the largest wind farm in Wales.

What is Gwynt y Môr?

Gwynt y Môr means "Sea Wind" in Welsh. This huge project is located in the Irish Sea, not far from the coast of North Wales. It has many giant wind turbines that spin to create clean energy.

This wind farm can produce 576 MW of power. To give you an idea, 576 MW is enough electricity to power around 400,000 homes every year!

Building This Giant

Plans for Gwynt y Môr were approved in 2008. This meant that people could start preparing to build it. Construction began in 2013. It took a lot of hard work and special ships to put all the parts together in the sea. By 2014, the wind farm was ready to start making electricity.

Gwynt y Môr is part of a group of offshore wind farms in the area. It is near the existing North Hoyle and Rhyl Flats offshore wind farms. All these projects are owned by a company called RWE npower.

Why Wind Power is Important

Wind farms like Gwynt y Môr are important because they help us make electricity without burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuels, like coal and gas, create pollution and add gases to the air that can harm our planet.

Clean Energy for Our Future

Using wind to make electricity is a way to create "clean energy." This means it doesn't pollute the air or water. It helps protect our environment and fight climate change. Wind is a renewable resource, which means we will never run out of it!
