A Look Back at Hätzingen's History
Hätzingen was first mentioned in old records way back in 1350. At that time, its name was written as Hezzinge(n).
For many years, Hätzingen was its own separate local government area, known as a municipality. But things changed over time.
- In 2004, Hätzingen joined with another nearby municipality called Luchsingen.
- Then, on January 1, 2011, Luchsingen itself became part of an even bigger new municipality. This new, larger area is what we now call Glarus Süd.
Where Hätzingen Is Located
Hätzingen is found in a beautiful valley. This valley is home to the Linth river. The village itself sits on the east side of the river. It is about 583 meters (or 1,913 feet) above sea level.
- To the south of Hätzingen, you'll find the village of Diesbach.
- If you go north, you'll reach Luchsingen. Luchsingen is on the west side of the river.
- Also to the north, but on the east side of the river, is the village of Haslen.
Getting Around Hätzingen
Hätzingen is easy to reach by road and by train.
Roads and Passes
The village is located right on Hauptstrasse 17. This is a main road that goes through the entire canton of Glarus. After leaving Glarus, the road goes up and over the Klausen Pass into the canton of Uri.
The Klausen Pass is a high mountain road. It's usually only open for cars and trucks between June and September. For the rest of the year, when there's snow, the main road and the railway line are the only ways to get to Hätzingen.
Train Travel
A railway line runs alongside the main road and the Linth river. This is the Weesen to Linthal railway line. Hätzingen has its own train station called Luchsingen-Hätzingen railway station.
You can catch the Zürich S-Bahn service S25 from this station. This train runs every hour. It connects Linthal with the big city of Zurich.
