Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz (born in Montevideo in 1934 – died in Buenos Aires on May 20, 1976) was an important politician from Uruguay. He was once the leader of the Chamber of Deputies, which is like a part of the country's parliament. Sadly, he was killed as part of a secret operation called Operation Condor.
A Life in Politics
Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz was a member of the National Party, a major political group in Uruguay. He worked as a deputy, which means he was elected by people to represent them in the government. He was the President of the Chamber of Deputies when a big change happened in Uruguay in 1973. This change was a "coup d'état," which means the military took control of the government. After this, Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz had to leave Uruguay and live in Argentina.
His Tragic Death
On May 18, 1976, Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz was taken by a group of people. His body was found a few days later, on May 21, in a car in Buenos Aires. Three other people were also found in the car. They included Zelmar Michelini, who was also a former politician, and two other people named William Whitelaw and Rosario del Carmen Barredo.
Years later, in 2006, a judge began to investigate these deaths. Some people, including a former leader named Juan María Bordaberry and a former government minister, were investigated because they were thought to be involved in planning these killings.
His Family
Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz was married to Matilde Rodriguez Larreta. They had five children together: Marcos, Juan Pablo, Magdalena, Facundo, and Mateo.
