Hélène Durand: A Botanical Artist

Early Life and Training

Hélène was the daughter of Theophile Durand. He was the director of the National Botanic Garden of Belgium from 1901 to 1912. Her mother was Sofie Van Eelde.

Hélène studied both art and botany. This special training helped her combine her artistic skills with scientific knowledge. For a while, she worked at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.

Working at the Botanic Garden

In 1912, Hélène started working full-time at the National Botanic Garden of Belgium. This garden is located near Bouchout Castle in Meise, just north of Brussels.

At the garden, she created many illustrations. Her drawings were very accurate and showed great scientific detail. She made line drawings and pictures for the wood museum.

Amazing Illustrations

Hélène Durand's drawings of gymnosperms are especially beautiful. Gymnosperms are a group of plants that include conifers like pine trees. Her pictures perfectly captured the soft colors and textures of their cones.

One drawing of a cone from an Abies procera tree took her more than 105 hours to complete! This shows how much care and effort she put into her work. Some of her illustrations were also published in science magazines.

Later Life

Hélène Durand lived in an apartment with her sister, Louise. She had a lung condition that doctors tried to treat. She even stayed in the countryside at Keerbergen for a while, which helped a little, but only for a short time. Hélène passed away on August 4, 1934.

She also worked with her father on a book called Sylloge Florae Congolanae.
