The H. Hudson Law Office is a special old building in Guilford, Maine. It was built around 1867 and looks very unique with its Italianate and Second Empire styles. For many years, two generations of the Hudson family used it as a place where they practiced law. The H. Hudson Law Office is located in the middle of Guilford, Maine. You can find it on the west side of Hudson Avenue. It's a short distance south of where Hudson Avenue meets Maine State Route 150.
What Does It Look Like?
This building is made of wood and is about one and a half stories tall. It has a special roof called a mansard roof, which is flared and covered with slate tiles. The outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboard siding. The building sits on a strong foundation made of granite stone.
The front of the building faces east and has three sections. The two outer sections have windows, and the main door is in the middle. Above the windows are decorative pieces of wood. The main entrance has a small roof supported by fancy carved brackets. On the roof, there are two small windows called dormers. These dormers have pointed roofs and decorative carvings on their sides. This building is known for being one of the most detailed and fancy buildings in the small town of Guilford.
A Family's Legacy
The law office was built around 1867 by a man named Henry Hudson. He was a well-known lawyer who worked in Guilford from 1849 until he passed away in 1877. After him, his son, who was also a lawyer, continued to use the office. He worked there until he retired in 1919.
Over the years in the 20th century, the building was used for different things. However, in the 1970s, it became a law office once again, just like it was originally.
