Haywood Swygert was born on March 17, 1943. He became a well-known figure in American education. He led major universities and helped shape policies.
Early Life and Education
Mr. Swygert went to South Philadelphia High School. He was later honored by being added to the school's Alumni Cultural Hall of Fame. He then attended Howard University, graduating in 1965. That same year, President Lyndon B. Johnson gave a famous speech to his graduating class.
After his first degree, Mr. Swygert continued his studies. He earned a law degree, called a J.D., from Howard University Law School.
Leading Universities
Before leading Howard University, Mr. Swygert was the president of the State University of New York at Albany. He held this position from 1990 to 1995. Before that, he was a senior leader at Temple University. At Temple, he was also a professor of law in the Temple University School of Law.
Mr. Swygert resigned from his role as president of Howard University on June 30, 2008. However, he continued to be involved with the university. He stayed on campus as a professor and helped with fundraising efforts.

Beyond his work at universities, Mr. Swygert has been involved in other important groups. He is a law professor. He was also a member of the Commission on Presidential Elections, a group that helps with how presidential elections are run.
