Early Life and Education
Haywood Swygert went to South Philadelphia High School. He was even honored in their Alumni Cultural Hall of Fame. After high school, he attended Howard University. He graduated from Howard University in 1965. That same year, President Lyndon B. Johnson gave a special speech to his graduating class.
Later, Swygert earned a law degree, called a J.D., from Howard University Law School. This degree allowed him to become a lawyer.
Leading Universities
Mr. Swygert has held many important roles at universities. Before becoming president of Howard University, he was the president of the State University of New York at Albany. He led that university from 1990 to 1995.
He also worked at Temple University. There, he was an executive vice president. He was also a law professor at the Temple University School of Law.

Beyond leading universities, Haywood Swygert is a law professor. He has also been a member of the Commission on Presidential Elections. This group helps with how presidential elections are run.
