Tenedos's Adventures at Sea
Patrolling the Coast
In April 1812, Tenedos joined a group of ships. This group was led by Sir Philip Broke. Their job was to guard the coast near Boston Harbor. They kept an eye out for enemy ships.
Stormy Weather in Halifax
On November 12, while Tenedos was docked in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a big winter storm hit. The strong winds and waves caused the ship to break free from its ropes. It nearly crashed into two other ships nearby!
Capturing the Sarah
On February 19, 1813, Tenedos captured a ship called the Sarah. The Sarah was a type of sailing ship called a brig. It was sailing from New York to Amsterdam. The Sarah was carrying a lot of goods. These included 425 bales of cotton and 186 barrels of wood ashes. It also had 3000 long wooden staves, which are used to make barrels.
Capturing the USS President
Tenedos was part of a group of ships that captured the USS President. This happened on January 15, 1815. The USS President was an American warship. The capture took place just outside New York Harbor.
The War Ends and Tenedos's Retirement
The War of 1812 officially ended on February 17, 1815. This happened when the US Congress approved the Treaty of Ghent. About a month later, Tenedos returned to Halifax. It had finished its patrols along the Eastern seaboard. In August 1815, Tenedos sailed back home to Chatham, England.
Later, starting in 1843, Tenedos was used for a different purpose. It became a floating prison, called a convict hulk. It was stationed at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda. This was a British territory. The old ship was finally taken apart in 1875.
