Ha Jae-se (born August 26, 1885, died January 28, 1944) was an important thinker and teacher during the Korean Empire. He was a follower of Confucianism, a system of thought from ancient China that focuses on good morals, family loyalty, and respect for elders.
Ha Jae-se was a direct descendant of Sir Ha Yeon. Sir Ha Yeon was a very skilled prime minister who served during the time of King Sejong the Great, a famous king in Korean history.
Ha Jae-se's Life
Ha Jae-se was born into a respected family of Confucian scholars in Sacheon city. His grandfather had passed away before he was born. From the age of seven, his father guided him in studying Confucianism. He continued his studies until he became an adult.
During a difficult time when Korea was under Japanese rule, Ha Jae-se became a leader among local Confucian scholars. He faced many challenges because he stood up for his beliefs.
He strongly disagreed with the type of education that the Japanese rulers tried to introduce. Instead, he believed that traditional Confucian education was very important. Ha Jae-se remained a dedicated Confucian scholar and teacher throughout his life. He kept teaching and promoting Confucian ideas until he passed away.
