Hacienda Kancabchén was a large farm or estate located in the Halachó Municipality in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. It was one of many properties that became very important during the 1800s because of the henequen plant. Henequen is a type of agave plant used to make strong fibers for ropes and other products. This period was known as the "henequen boom" because the plant brought a lot of wealth to the region. There are several other haciendas with the same name in Yucatán, like Hacienda Kancabchén in Baca and [[Hacienda Kancabchén (Homún)].

What's in a Name?

The name Kancabchén comes from the Mayan language. It means "the well of the red ground." This name likely describes the soil and water sources found at the hacienda.

A Look at History

Haciendas in Yucatán, like Kancabchén, were once very large and powerful farms. They played a big role in the economy of the region, especially during the henequen boom.

Over time, the spelling of the hacienda's name changed. In 1970, it was changed from Kancabchén to Kankabchén. However, in 1990, the original spelling of Kancabchén was brought back.

A major change happened in 1937 because of a land reform plan by President Lazaro Cardenas. This plan aimed to give land back to the people who worked on it. Before this, many people lived and worked on the haciendas. After the reform, these large farms were turned into collective farms called ejidos. This meant the land was owned by the community, not just one person. The original landowners were allowed to keep only a small part of their land, about 150 hectares, for their own family.

People of Kancabchén

Before the land reform in 1937, population numbers for Kancabchén showed how many people lived and worked on the hacienda itself. After 1937, the numbers show how many people lived in the community that grew around the former hacienda. The main hacienda buildings were then only home to the owner's family.

According to a census taken in 2005 by the INEGI, the community of Kancabchén had 421 people living there. Out of these, 217 were men and 204 were women.

The population of Kancabchén has changed over the years:

  • In 1900, there were 72 people.
  • By 1910, it grew to 102 people.
  • The population continued to grow, reaching 273 in 1990.
  • By 2005, the population was 421.
