Hacienda Kancabchén de Valencia is an old estate located in the Sudzal Municipality in Yucatán, Mexico. It is in the southeastern part of the country. This hacienda was one of many properties that became important during the "henequen boom" in the 1800s. Henequen is a plant used to make strong fibers. There are several other places in Yucatán with similar names, like Hacienda Kancabchén in Baca and Hacienda Kancabchén (Homún).
What's in a Name?
The name "Kancabchén" comes from the Mayan language. It means "the well of the red ground." This likely refers to the soil or a water source nearby. "Valencia" is the name of a city in Spain.
A Look Back at History
Haciendas in Yucatán were large estates, often like big farms. Many of them grew henequen, a plant that was very important for making rope and other products. This period was known as the henequen boom.
In 1940, the name of this particular hacienda was changed. It went from just Kancabchén to Kancabchén de Valencia. At the same time, its location was moved from the Municipality of Izamal to the Municipality of Sudzal.
People and Population
Before 1937, many people lived and worked on these haciendas. However, things changed a lot with a new land reform law. This law was put in place by President Lazaro Cardenas.
His decree turned the haciendas into collective ejidos. An ejido is a piece of land used for farming by a community. This meant that only a small part of the land (about 150 hectares) was left for the original landowners. After this change, only the owner's family lived at Hacienda Kancabchén de Valencia.
According to a census in 2005, there were 26 people living in the community. This included 16 men and 10 women.
