Hacienda Kankabchén is a historic property located in the Seyé Municipality in the state of Yucatán, which is in southeastern Mexico. It was one of many large farms that became important during the 1800s because of the henequen plant. There are several other places in Yucatán with a similar name, like Hacienda Kancabchén in Baca and Hacienda Kancabchén (Halachó).

What Does Kankabchén Mean?
The name Kankabchén comes from the Mayan language. It means "the well of the red ground." This name likely describes the type of soil or a water source found at the hacienda.
The Story of Hacienda Kankabchén
Haciendas were like big estates or plantations in Mexico. Many of them, including Kankabchén, grew a plant called henequen. This plant was very important in the 1800s. Its fibers were used to make ropes and other products. This period was known as the "henequen boom" because the plant brought a lot of wealth to the region.
Haciendas were often self-sufficient communities. Many people lived and worked on these properties. They were central to the economy and social life in Yucatán for a long time.
People Living at Kankabchén
Before 1937, many people lived and worked on haciendas like Kankabchén. However, things changed a lot that year. The Mexican government, led by President Lazaro Cardenas, made a big change called the agrarian land reform.
This reform turned many haciendas into collective farms called ejidos. An ejido is land that a community owns and works together. The original landowners were only allowed to keep a small part of their land, about 150 hectares, for their own family to use.
After 1937, the population numbers for Kankabchén changed. They no longer counted all the workers living on the farm. Instead, they counted only the owner's immediate family living in the main hacienda house.
According to a count done in 2005 by INEGI (which is like the census bureau in Mexico), there were no permanent residents living at Hacienda Kankabchén at that time.
