The Hacienda de Carlos Vassallo is a special historic place in Dorado, Puerto Rico. It is also known by other names, like Casa Hacienda de Don Oscar Nevárez or Hacienda de Río Nuevo.
A "hacienda" is a large estate or farm, often with a main house and buildings for farming. This hacienda is important because of its history in farming, its unique buildings, and its role in local industry. It shows a big part of Puerto Rico's past and culture.
Today, this privately owned property is a busy dairy farm. It has more than 350 cows! You can often see the cows from Puerto Rico Highway 693 and Puerto Rico Highway 2, especially near the Plata River.
The Hacienda de Carlos Vassallo was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on March 22, 1989. This means it's recognized as a place important to the history of the United States.
A Look at the Hacienda's History
The Hacienda de Carlos Vassallo has been around for a long time. It was built in 1849. Over the years, many different people have owned this large property. One of the past owners was Don José Nevares.
A relative of a former governor of Puerto Rico, Oscar Nevares, also has a house here. The hacienda has always been a place for farming and industry.
The Historic Smoke Stack
One of the most interesting parts of the hacienda is a tall, old smoke stack. This chimney was built in 1861. It was used when the hacienda was a sugarcane mill.
A sugarcane mill is a factory where sugarcane is processed to make sugar. The smoke stack would have been part of the machinery that helped power the mill. It's a cool reminder of how things used to be made.
