Hacoda, also known as Martha, is a small place in Geneva County, Alabama, United States. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Hacoda is found along Alabama State Route 54, about 7.5 miles (12.1 km) southwest of a town called Samson.
A Look Back: Hacoda's History
How Hacoda Got Its Name
This community was first named Martha. It was given this name to honor the wife of the very first postmaster there.
Later, in 1904, the name was changed to Hacoda. This new name is a portmanteau. That means it's a word made by blending parts of other words. Hacoda comes from the last names of three local businessmen: Hart, Coleman, and Davis.
Post Office Operations
A post office served the community for many years. It operated under the name Martha from 1882 until 1904. After the name change, it continued to operate as the Hacoda post office from 1904 until 1956.
