Hadopyrgus rawhiti is a tiny freshwater snail that lives only in New Zealand. It's a very special snail, but it's also in big trouble because it's "critically endangered." This means there are very few of them left, and they could disappear forever if we don't protect them.
Where Does It Live?
This little snail has a very specific home. So far, scientists have only found it in one tiny spot in New Zealand. It lives near a waterfall, in a damp, trickling area called a "seepage." A seepage is like a small, wet patch of ground where water slowly leaks out. This special place is located in Kenepuru Sound, near a spot called Double Bay.
We don't know exactly how many of these snails are left. However, their home is at risk. If their habitat (the place where they live) gets damaged or destroyed, it could be very bad news for them.
Why Is It Endangered?
In November 2018, the Department of Conservation in New Zealand looked at Hadopyrgus rawhiti. They officially listed it as "Nationally Critical" under the New Zealand Threat Classification System. This is the highest level of threat for a species in New Zealand.
The snail was given this serious status because it has only ever been found in one small area. This area is less than one hectare in size, which is about the size of a sports field. Because its entire population lives in such a tiny, single spot, it's very vulnerable to anything that might harm that specific location.
