Haemodorum spicatum is a unique plant found in the Haemodoraceae family. It grows naturally in the southern part of Western Australia. This plant is known for its interesting features and vibrant colors.

Description

The leaves of Haemodorum spicatum can be shaped like a cylinder (called terete) or be oval. They usually grow between 12 and 59 centimeters long. Their width is quite narrow, from 1 to 5 millimeters. These leaves are very smooth, with no rough bristles or hairs on their edges or surfaces.

The plant has a special flower stalk, known as a scape. This stalk is also smooth and stands tall, reaching about 65 to 77.5 centimeters in length.

Flower Features

The flowers grow in a cluster called an inflorescence. At the base of this cluster, there is a small leaf-like part called a bract. This bract is about 25 to 45 millimeters long. Each flower in the cluster sits on a tiny stem, only 2 to 2.5 millimeters long.

The individual flowers are fairly small, measuring 11 to 14 millimeters long. The outer part of the flower, called the perianth, is smooth and has a round, symmetrical shape. What's cool is that the perianth can be many different colors! It might be yellow, red, reddish-brown, purple, black, brown, or yellowish-brown.

The perianth is made up of six parts, called tepals. There are three inner tepals and three outer tepals, all clearly visible. Inside the flower, there are three stamens, which are the male parts that produce pollen. These stamens are all at the same height. Each stamen has a thin stalk, called a filament, about 1 to 1.2 millimeters long. At the end of the filament is the anther, which holds the pollen. The anthers are 2 to 2.7 millimeters long and don't have any extra parts.

The female part of the flower, called the style, is quite long, measuring 10 to 12 millimeters. This plant typically blooms during the warmer months. You can see its flowers in October, November, December, or January.
