The Hagerstown Armory is a very old and important building in Hagerstown, Maryland. It's located at 328 N. Potomac Street. An armory is a place where soldiers, often from a state's National Guard, train and store their equipment. This building was constructed in 1926. It looks a lot like a castle from the Middle Ages!

What Does the Hagerstown Armory Look Like?

The Hagerstown Armory is a two-story building made of brick. It also has a full basement. The way the bricks are laid is called "Flemish bond," which is a special pattern.

Castle-Like Features

The front of the building has a main section in the middle. On each side of this main section, there are two tall, three-story towers. The tops of these towers have cool decorations. They have a ring of wavy stone, then a ring of brick shapes called dentils (which look like teeth). On top of that, there are two crenelles on each side. Crenelles are the blocky parts you see on castle walls, used for defense.

The very center of the building's roof also has two crenelles with stone caps. Between these, you can see a stone tablet. This tablet has the Seal of Maryland, which is the official symbol of the state.

Why is the Armory Important?

The Hagerstown Armory is considered a historic place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This means it's a special building that is protected because of its history and unique design.

Future of the Building

In 2009, a local newspaper, the Hagerstown Herald-Mail, reported some news about the armory. The article said that the building might be sold. There were plans to change it into a center to help people with their well-being.
