Haho's Family Connections
Haho was the son of Paumakua of Maui, who was also a High Chief. His mother was Chiefess Manokalililani. She was the daughter of Chiefess Hoʻohokukalani II. Interestingly, Manokalililani was also the sister of Paumakua, Haho's father.
Haho married a High Chiefess named Kauilaʻanapa. She is sometimes called Kauilaianapu in ancient chants. Haho and Kauilaʻanapa had a son named Palena of Maui. Palena later married Hikawai-Nui. Hikawai-Nui was also the daughter of Kauilaʻanapa, but from another marriage she had with a man named Limaloa-Lialea.
Both Haho and his son, Palena, are mentioned in a very old and important Hawaiian chant called Kumulipo. This chant tells the story of creation and the family lines of Hawaiian chiefs.
Haho's Important Legacy
Haho is remembered for starting something very important called the Aha-Aliʻi. This name means "the gathering of chiefs." It was a special group or meeting place for the leaders of Maui. This institution helped to organize and unite the chiefs, making the government stronger.
