Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hikawai (also spelled as Hīkawai) was an important leader and a High Chiefess from the island of Maui in ancient Hawaii. She was also known by another name, Hiilani-Hiileialialia. Hikawai was an ancestor of a later chief named Pilikaaiea. Sometimes, people called her Hikawai Nui or Hikawainui, which means "Great Hikawai."

The Life of Chiefess Hikawai

Hikawai was the daughter of Kauilaʻanapa and Limaloa-Lialea. Her mother, Kauilaʻanapa, was also married to her own brother, Chief Haho of Maui. Their son was Chief Palena of Maui. Palena later became chief after his father, Haho.

Royal Marriage and Family

Hikawai married Palena, who was her half-brother. In ancient Hawaii, it was a special custom for royal families to marry within their close relatives. This was done to keep their royal power and sacred status strong within the family line. Their marriage was considered a very important and sacred union.

Hikawai and Palena had a son named Hanalaʻa. After his father Palena passed away, Hanalaʻa became the next chief of Maui.

It is not known if Hikawai became a widow or how long she lived after Palena. Her husband was buried on the island of Oahu. It is possible that Hikawai was also buried there when she passed away.
