About Haider Qureshi
His Early Life
Haider Qureshi was born in Rabwah, a town in the Chiniot District of Punjab. His family spoke the Siraiki language. His father, Qureshi Ghulam Sarwar, was from Khanpur, Rahim Yar Khan.
Haider Qureshi started writing poems when he was 18 years old. After finishing his secondary school in 1968, he began working at a sugar mill. That same year, he wrote his very first romantic story. In 1971, soon after he got married, he wrote his first ghazal, which is a type of poem.
Later, he went to college and earned his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Urdu literature in 1974. In 1994, Haider Qureshi moved to Germany. He still lives there and is now a German citizen.
His Writing Journey
Haider Qureshi was very active in the groups of writers in Khanpur. He has published six books that are collections of his poems, including ghazal, nazm, and mahiya. He has also written short stories, memories, and light essays called inshaiya.
He even wrote a travel story about his trip to Mecca. One of his big books, Umre-La ' haasil ka Haasil, collects 11 of his earlier works. Haider Qureshi is also a big supporter of Urdu mahiya, a special type of poetry. People have both praised and criticized his work in this area.
He is the editor of a literary magazine called Jadeed Adab. This magazine first started in Khanpur in 1978. Now, it is published from Germany. Haider Qureshi's poems have been translated into many languages, including English, Arabic, German, and Turkish.
Most of his writing is found in a large book called Umr-e-Lahaasil Ka Haasil. This book is a Kulliyat, which means it contains all of his poetry and prose (like stories and essays).
The Magazine: Jadeed Adab
Jadeed Adab is an Urdu literary magazine that Haider Qureshi founded. He is still its main editor. The magazine is published from Germany, Pakistan, and India. You can find it both in print and online.
It first started in 1978 in Khanpur, Pakistan. To help publish the magazine, Haider Qureshi used money from selling his wife Mubarika Haider's jewelry. After some time, the magazine stopped being published. However, it was later restarted from Germany.
For many years, Jadeed Adab was the only Urdu literary magazine that was regularly published both in print and on the internet.
What People Say About His Work
The Dawn newspaper, a well-known publication, has praised Haider Qureshi's poetry. They said:
"Haider's poetry mixes traditional Urdu with local language. You can find many examples of 'linguistic liberty' in it. He might be the only living poet who purposely uses an old Punjabi dialect in Urdu ghazal...
His use of simple words, avoiding complicated ideas, and creating a special feeling are all very good. Whether it's a ghazal, nazm, or mahiya, you can often see the local area in his poems."
