Haila's Early Life and Music Journey

Haila was born in Amancio, Las Tunas, Cuba, on January 28, 1974. She started her music lessons when she was nine years old in Santiago de Cuba. There, she studied dance. When she was 15, her family moved to Havana. This move briefly stopped her music career.

In Havana, Haila met Yaquelín Castellanos, a famous son singer. Yaquelín really liked Haila's singing talent. Haila was then asked to join a group called Septeto Tradición. This group mostly played music in the traditional style of son septetos from the 1920s and 1930s. Later, she performed in a cabaret called Las Avenidas. She also joined the group Habana Son. In 1994, Haila had her first performance outside Cuba. This was in Mexico with a project called Guajira Habanera.

In September 1994, Haila became a vocalist for the group Bamboleo. She recorded two albums with them. She also performed in many different countries. This helped her become known as a talented singer.

In 1998, Haila started a new timba band called Azúcar Negra. She created this band with the musician and composer Leonel Limonta. Their band signed with Bis Music. They had many successful shows in Europe and Latin America. Their song "Andar Andando" became their biggest hit.

Haila's Solo Career

In the year 2000, Haila began her solo career. She worked on an album called La rumba soy yo. This album featured many different artists and focused on Cuban rumba music. It won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Folk Album in 2001. That same year, Haila released her first solo album, which was named Haila. In 2002, she released a live album.
