Haila María Mompié González (born January 28, 1974), known as Haila Mompié or just Haila, is a famous Cuban singer. She is especially good at singing son and timba music. Haila was the main singer for the band Azúcar Negra. She also sang with the group Bamboleo and has had a very successful career as a solo artist.
Her Life and Music Journey
Haila was born on January 28, 1974, in a place called Amancio, in Las Tunas, Cuba.
She started learning music and dance when she was nine years old in Santiago de Cuba. When she was 15, her family moved to Havana. This made her pause her music studies for a short time. In Havana, she met a well-known son singer named Yaquelín Castellanos. Yaquelín was very impressed with Haila's singing. Haila then got a chance to join a group called Septeto Tradición. This group played music in the old style of son septetos from the 1920s and 1930s.
After that, Haila performed in a cabaret called Las Avenidas. She also joined another group named Habana Son. In 1994, she traveled outside Cuba for the first time to perform in Mexico with a project called Guajira Habanera.
In September 1994, Haila became a vocalist for the group Bamboleo. She recorded two music albums with them. She also performed in many different countries, which helped her become a well-known singer.
In 1998, Haila and musician Leonel Limonta started a timba band called Azúcar Negra. Their music was released by Bis Music. They had many popular performances in Europe and Latin America. Their song "Andar Andando" became a very big hit.
Starting Her Solo Career
Haila began her solo music career in the year 2000. She worked on an album called La rumba soy yo. This album featured many different artists and won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Folk Album in 2001. That same year, she released her first album as a solo artist, simply called Haila. A live album followed in 2002.
In 2004, she released her album Diferente. This album was produced by David Calzado, who leads the famous band Charanga Habanera. In 2011, Haila released Mala. Her husband, Aned Mota, who used to be a singer for Charanga Habanera, produced this album. Mala won the Cuba Disco Award in the Latin Music category in 2012. Her most recent album is Cómo voy a decirte, which came out in 2015.
