Hajime Ishii (石井 肇, Ishii Hajime, born May 26, 1959) is a former Japanese football player and manager. He was born in Kanagawa Prefecture on May 26, 1959. Ishii played as a defender during his career. He later became a coach and manager for several football clubs.

Playing Football: Hajime Ishii's Career

Hajime Ishii started his football journey in school. He played for Nihon University High School from 1975 to 1977. After that, he continued playing at Nihon University from 1978 to 1981. These years helped him develop his skills as a defender.

Joining Professional Teams

In 1982, after finishing university, Ishii joined a professional team called Nissan Motors. This team was a big part of his playing career. He played there until 1988. During his time at Nissan Motors, he helped the team achieve success.

Winning Trophies as a Player

With Nissan Motors, Ishii won the Emperor's Cup twice. They won it in 1983 and again in 1985. The Emperor's Cup is one of the most important football tournaments in Japan. His team also finished second in the Japan Soccer League in 1983 and 1984. They were also runners-up in the JSL Cup three times.

Moving to Otsuka Pharmaceutical

In 1988, Ishii moved to another team, Otsuka Pharmaceutical. He continued his playing career there until 1991. This move marked a new chapter for him in Japanese football.

Hajime Ishii's career didn't stop at playing. He also became a successful coach and manager. His journey into coaching began while he was still playing.

Starting as an Assistant Coach

In 1988, while playing for Otsuka Pharmaceutical, Ishii also took on the role of an assistant coach. This was his first step into leading a team from the sidelines. He learned a lot about strategy and team management.

Becoming a Manager

Ishii was promoted to manager of Otsuka Pharmaceutical in 1993. He led the team for a few years, gaining valuable experience. After that, he moved to Consadole Sapporo in 1997 as an assistant coach.

In October 1998, he got a big opportunity. The main manager, Hugo Fernandez, left the team, and Ishii was chosen to take over as manager. He led Consadole Sapporo for the rest of that year.

Managing Other Teams

Ishii continued his managing career in 2003. He joined Vegalta Sendai as a coach. In September of that year, he briefly took over as caretaker manager. This means he managed the team temporarily. Later, in 2017, he also managed Shanghai JuJu Sports F.C. in China.
