Hugo Daniel Fernández Vallejo (born February 2, 1945 – died August 1, 2022) was a talented football player and coach from Uruguay. He played as a defender, a position in football where players mainly focus on stopping the other team from scoring goals. Later in his life, he became a manager, guiding different football teams to success.
Hugo Fernández's Football Journey
Hugo Fernández started his professional football career in Uruguay. He played for several teams there, including Nacional and CA Peñarol. These are two of the biggest football clubs in Uruguay.
He also played in other countries. He spent time playing in Argentina for Gimnasia LP. Later, he moved to Spain to play for Tenerife.
In 1979, Hugo Fernández joined Puebla F.C. in Mexico. He played many games for them, scoring 7 goals as a defender. After his time in Mexico, he returned to Uruguay to play for CA Peñarol again. He finished his playing career back in Mexico with Atlas.
Becoming a Coach
After he stopped playing football, Hugo Fernández decided to become a coach. He used his experience as a player to help new teams. He managed many different clubs throughout his coaching career.
He coached his former team, Puebla, three different times. He also managed Consadole Sapporo in Japan. His coaching journey took him to various clubs in Mexico, including Tigres, Tampico Madero, Irapuato, Veracruz, Lobos BUAP, and Dorados de Sinaloa. He also coached Nacional in Uruguay.
Hugo Fernández was known for his dedication to football, both as a player and as a coach. He passed away in 2022, leaving behind a great legacy in the world of football.
