Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hakon Sweynson (also known as Hacon Swegenson) was an important person in English history. He was the only son of Sweyn Godwinson. This made him the nephew of Harold II of England, who was a famous king.

A Young Hostage

Hakon's story began in 1051. At that time, there was a big disagreement between his grandfather, Godwin, Earl of Wessex, and King Edward the Confessor. To make sure Earl Godwin would behave, Hakon was given to the King as a hostage. This meant he was held by the King to guarantee his grandfather's actions.

Because of this conflict, Earl Godwin and his other sons had to leave England for a while.

Journey to Normandy

In 1052, Earl Godwin came back to England with an army. Many people who supported King Edward, especially a leader named Archbishop Robert of Jumièges, left England quickly. It seems that Hakon and his uncle, Wulfnoth Godwinson, were taken by the Archbishop. They were brought to Normandy, a region in France. There, they were given to Duke William of Normandy, who would later become known as William the Conqueror.

Harold's Mission

Years later, around 1064 or 1065, Hakon's uncle, Harold, made a trip to Normandy. A historical writer named Eadmer wrote that Harold went there for a special reason. He wanted to free both Hakon and Wulfnoth. To do this, Harold brought a lot of money with him. He paid this money to a local ruler named Guy I of Ponthieu.

Hakon eventually returned to England with Harold. After this, we don't know much more about what happened to him. However, his uncle Wulfnoth stayed in Normandy. He did not take part in the famous Battle of Hastings and lived longer than William the Conqueror.
