Hakone, Kanagawa facts for kids
Hakone (箱根町, Hakone-machi) is a beautiful town in Japan. It's located in the Kanagawa Prefecture, which is like a state or region, on the big island of Honshū. Hakone is famous for its stunning nature, including lakes and mountains, and its rich history. It's a very popular place for tourists to visit.
A Glimpse into Hakone's Past
Long ago, during a time in Japan called the Edo period (from 1603 to 1868), Hakone was a very important place. It was the 10th of 53 special stops along the Tōkaidō road. This road was a major route that connected Edo (which is now Tokyo) with Kyoto, the old capital city.
These stops were called shuku-eki or waystations. They were like rest stops where travelers could eat, sleep, and prepare for the next part of their journey. The government, led by the Shogun, made sure these stations were well-maintained. Hakone-juku, as it was known then, played a key role in controlling who traveled between the two big cities.
