Half-hanging facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Half-hanging was a very harsh method sometimes used in the past to try and force people to give information. It involved putting a rope around a person's neck and tightening it until they passed out. Then, the rope would be loosened, and the person would wake up. This process might be repeated to scare them into talking.

Half-hanging in History

This method was used during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. This was a time when people in Ireland were fighting against British rule in Ireland. Groups working for the government, like the militia and yeomanry (who were like local soldiers), sometimes used half-hanging against people they thought were rebels.

A Famous Example

One person who experienced half-hanging was Anne Devlin. She was the housekeeper for a famous Irish leader named Robert Emmet. Her story shows how difficult and dangerous those times were for many people.
