Early Life and Family
Halid Bešlić was born in a small village called Knežina. This village is near Sokolac in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At that time, Bosnia and Herzegovina was part of a larger country called Yugoslavia.
His father, Mujo Bešlić, was a military man. Mujo passed away in 2016 at the age of 83. Halid was on a music tour in the United States when his father died. He traveled back to attend the funeral. His father had lived in a village near Olovo since the Bosnian War began in 1992.
Starting His Music Journey
After completing his military service, Halid moved to Sarajevo. Sarajevo is the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He started performing his music in local restaurants. This was how he began his professional singing career.
Between 1979 and 1982, Halid released eight singles. These were his first musical recordings. His very first studio album, called Sijedi starac (which means Grey Old Man), came out in 1981.
A Star Across Yugoslavia
By 1984, Halid Bešlić was becoming very famous. His songs like "Neću, neću dijamante" (I Don't Want, I Don't Want Diamonds) became huge hits. Another popular song was "Budi budi uvijek srećna" (Always, Always Be Happy). People all over Yugoslavia loved his music.
During the 1980s, Halid released eight albums. Many of his songs from this time became classics. Some of these include "Vraćam se majci u Bosnu" (I Am Returning to my Mother in Bosnia) and "Sjećam se" (I Remember). Other favorites were "Hej, zoro, ne svani" (Hey, Dawn, Don't Rise) and "Eh, kad bi ti" (Oh, When You Would).
Music and Humanitarian Work
In the 1990s, Yugoslavia experienced a period of big changes and conflict. Bosnia and Herzegovina faced a difficult war. During this time, Halid Bešlić used his music to help others. He performed over 500 concerts across Europe. These concerts raised money and support for people affected by the war in his home country. Throughout his career, he recorded 18 albums and performed countless live shows.
Later Hits and Albums
Halid continued to release popular songs in the 2000s and 2010s. His 2003 album, Prvi poljubac (First Kiss), had a hit song with the same name. In 2007, his album Halid 08 featured the song "Miljacka." This song was named after a famous river in Bosnia.
Later, his 2013 album Romanija included songs like "Štiklom o kamen" (High Heels on Stone). It also had "Kad zaigra srce od meraka" (When the Heart Dances with Joy). His last album, Trebević, was released in February 2020. It was named after a beautiful Bosnian mountain.
