What is Hall's Tavern?

Hall's Tavern has had a few different names over the years. It started as a private home. Later, it became a busy place where people could eat, drink, and sleep. This type of place was called a tavern. Today, it is a bed and breakfast. This means people can stay there overnight and enjoy breakfast in the morning.

What Does Hall's Tavern Look Like?

Hall's Tavern is a two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood and has a roof that slopes down on two sides. There are two chimneys inside the house. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The building sits on a strong granite foundation.

The main part of the house has five windows across the front. The front door is in the middle. It has fancy columns on each side. Above the door, there is a small window with four glass panes. Older parts of the house are still inside. You can see beautiful old woodwork and finishes from the Federal period. This was a popular style around the time the house was built. The room where the tavern used to serve drinks still has its original plaster walls. These walls have special stencil designs. These designs are similar to those made by an artist named Moses Eaton.

The Story of Hall's Tavern

A farmer named Nicholas Hall built this house around 1800. He came from Dover, New Hampshire. The Hall family owned the house for most of the 1800s. Nicholas Hall's son, Ozni, took over the property in 1823. He probably turned the house into a tavern.

The house was moved around 1826 or 1827. This happened when the road it sits on, Gray Road, was changed. It is thought that the house became a tavern around the same time it was moved. Today, Hall's Tavern is a cozy bed and breakfast. It welcomes guests who want to experience a piece of history.
