Halls are popular cough drops that help soothe your throat. They are a British brand, meaning they started in the United Kingdom. Since 2015, a company called Mondelēz International has owned Halls.
Halls cough drops contain a special ingredient called menthol. Menthol makes your throat feel cool and can help calm down a cough. It works like a mild pain reliever for your throat.
In some warmer countries, like Brazil, Malaysia, and the Philippines, Halls are sold as a refreshing hard candy. They are not always seen as a medicine for coughs in these places.
The Story of Halls
How Halls Began
The Hall Brothers company started in 1893. Three brothers, Edwin, Thomas, and Norman Hall, created it. At first, they made jam! Later, they began making boiled sweets and candies.
In 1927, the brothers introduced a new sweet called Mentho-Lyptus. This sweet had menthol and eucalyptus, which helped with sore throats and coughs. Halls cough drops first came to the United States in the 1950s.
Who Owned Halls Over Time
Over the years, Halls has been owned by several different companies.
- In 1964, a company called Warner-Lambert bought the Hall Brothers company.
- Production of Halls moved to Radcliffe, England, in 1970.
- Then, in 2000, Pfizer bought Warner-Lambert.
- Just two years later, in 2002, Halls was sold to Cadbury Schweppes. Cadbury closed the Radcliffe factory in 2004.
- In 2010, Kraft Foods bought Cadbury.
- When Kraft Foods split into two companies in 2012, Halls became part of Mondelez.
In 2022, Mondelez announced plans to sell some of its brands, including Halls. This was so they could focus more on their cookie business. While some gum brands were sold in 2023, Halls is still a brand that Mondelez plans to sell.
