The History of Mondelez International
How it All Started
Mondelez International has a long history that goes back to a company called the National Dairy Products Corporation. This company was founded on December 10, 1923, by Thomas H. McInnerney and Edward E. Rieck. They first focused on the ice cream business in the United States.
In 1924, the Kraft Cheese Company was started. It quickly became a big name and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1928, Kraft bought Phenix Cheese Company, which made Philadelphia Cream Cheese. After this, the company changed its name to Kraft-Phenix Cheese Company.
In 1930, National Dairy bought Kraft Phenix. Even though they were now one big company, the Kraft Phenix part still worked pretty much on its own.
Becoming a Snack Powerhouse
For many years, the company was known as Kraft Foods Inc. In 2009, Kraft Foods tried to buy a famous British candy company called Cadbury. Cadbury makes popular chocolates like Cadbury Dairy Milk. At first, Cadbury said no to the offer, but after more talks, they agreed in January 2010. This was a very big deal, costing about $19.5 billion!
After buying Cadbury, Kraft Foods decided to make a big change. In August 2011, they announced they would split into two separate companies. One company would focus on snacks and international foods, and the other would focus on grocery products in North America.
This split happened in October 2012. The snack and international food company was named Mondelez International. The grocery business became a new company called Kraft Foods Group. Later, Kraft Foods Group joined with another company, Heinz, to form Kraft Heinz.
Growing Even Bigger
Mondelez International has continued to grow by adding more brands to its family.
- In 2014, they combined their coffee business with a Dutch company called Douwe Egberts. The new company was named Jacobs Douwe Egberts.
- In 2018, Mondelez bought Tate's Bake Shop, which is famous for its delicious cookies.
- In 2019, they acquired a majority share in Perfect Snacks, known for its refrigerated protein bars.
- In 2020, they bought Give & Go, a company that makes popular two-bite brownies.
- In 2021, Mondelez acquired Hu Master Holdings, known for its healthy snacks.
- Also in 2021, they bought Chipita S.A., a company famous for croissants and baked snacks in Europe.
- In 2022, Mondelez acquired Ricolino, a confectionery business from Grupo Bimbo.
- In June 2022, Mondelez announced they would buy Clif Bar, adding popular energy bars like Clif, Luna, and Clif Bar Kids to their products.
- In December 2022, Mondelez decided to sell its gum business, including brands like Trident and Dentyne, to another company called Perfetti Van Melle. This deal was completed in October 2023.
