Ritz Crackers are a very popular type of snack cracker. They were first made by a company called Nabisco in 1934.
The original Ritz Crackers are round and have a light salty taste. Each cracker has seven small holes and a pretty wavy edge. Today, the Ritz cracker brand is owned by a company called Mondelēz International.
A small serving of about 5 original Ritz crackers (which is about 15 grams) gives you about 79 calories. It also has 1 gram of protein and 4 grams of fat. If you eat the whole wheat version, it has a bit less fat and calories.
The Story of Ritz Crackers
In the early 1900s, a company called Jackson Cracker made a small, round cracker called the Jaxon. Nabisco bought this company in 1919.
Nabisco then launched the Ritz Cracker in 1934. They wanted to compete with a similar cracker called Hi Ho made by another company. So, they asked an employee named Sydney Stern to come up with a name and a plan to sell the new cracker.
Stern chose the name 'Ritz'. This name sounded fancy and luxurious, which was a nice idea for people living through the Great Depression. It offered them "a bite of the good life." He also designed the famous blue circle and yellow lettering logo. He got the idea from the round label inside his hat!
In 2011, a survey found that Ritz was seen as the "best snack brand" by people in America.
You can even see a cartoon drawing of a box of Ritz Crackers in an old cartoon from 1939. It was called Mickey's Surprise Party and was made by Walt Disney Productions for Nabisco.
Ritz Crackers Around the World
Ritz Crackers come in many different kinds. Some popular types include Original, Roasted Vegetable, Honey Wheat, Garlic Butter, and Whole Wheat. There are also "Ritz Fresh Stacks," which are small packs of crackers.
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, you can find Original Ritz Crackers and Cheese flavor. There are also "Ritz Cheese Sandwich" crackers, which have cheese spread between two crackers. You can also buy mini-crackers in small packs.
Sometimes, companies change the size of their products without changing the price. This is called "shrinkflation." In May 2024, the 200 gram boxes of Ritz Crackers in the UK were replaced with smaller 150 gram boxes, but the price stayed the same.
