How It All Started
Green & Black's began in 1991. It was started by a couple, Craig Sams and Josephine Fairley. Craig was a pioneer in organic food. Josephine was a journalist.
The company's name has a special meaning. "Green" stands for their care for the environment. "Black" refers to the dark chocolate they wanted to make. This chocolate has a lot of cocoa.
In 1994, the company started buying Fairtrade cocoa. They bought it from Maya farmers in Belize. This cocoa was used for their Maya Gold chocolate bar.
Green & Black's won an award in 1994. It was for good business practices. They also got the UK's first Fairtrade mark. The company has a small office in Belize.
Growing Bigger and Fair Trade
In May 2005, Cadbury bought Green & Black's. Cadbury promised to let Green & Black's run as its own business.
