Hamberg Glacier is a large river of ice found on South Georgia. This island is located in the southern Atlantic Ocean. The glacier flows towards the northeast, moving from the side of Mount Sugartop to the western part of Moraine Fjord.

Location and Flow

Hamberg Glacier is an important part of the icy landscape of South Georgia. It starts on the northeast side of a mountain called Mount Sugartop. From there, the glacier flows in an east-northeasterly direction. It ends on the west side of the head of Moraine Fjord, which is a narrow inlet of the sea.

How Hamberg Glacier Got Its Name

The Hamberg Glacier was first mapped by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition. This expedition took place between 1901 and 1904. It was led by a famous explorer named Otto Nordenskiöld.

Nordenskiöld named the glacier after Axel Hamberg. Axel Hamberg was a Swedish scientist. He was known as a geographer, a mineralogist (someone who studies minerals), and an Arctic explorer. Naming the glacier after him was a way to honor his work.
