Hamilton City Hall facts for kids
Hamilton City Hall is an important building in downtown Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It is where the city's government works. The building is 8 storeys tall, about 34 meters high. You can find it at the corner of Main Street West and Bay Street South. It is right across from the FirstOntario Concert Hall and the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
The City Hall officially opened its doors on November 21, 1960. It was designed by an architect named Stanley Roscoe. The building has a modern look, known as the International Style of architecture. The Pigott Construction Company built it, and it cost 9.4 million dollars.
The address of the building is 71 Main Street West. This number was chosen for a special reason. Before the new City Hall was built, some older buildings were taken down. This meant the city leaders could pick almost any odd number for the address. They chose 71 to remember how many years the old City Hall on James Street North had been used.
In 2005, the Hamilton City Council decided to protect the building as a heritage structure. This means it is an important part of the city's history. One special feature on the outside of the building is its beautiful Italian glass tile mosaics.
Making Changes: The Renovation Project
In May 2007, the Hamilton City Council decided to update the building. This big renovation project started in June 2008. The plans and costs for the changes were approved by the council in October 2008. This allowed construction work to begin later that year.
The renovation was expected to finish by July 1, 2010. City services, like different government offices, started moving back into the updated Hamilton City Hall in April 2010.
